How to Compare Strength Lifts Fairly
Compare strength lifts fairly by matching the lift, standard, equipment, bodyweight, category, and scoring method before interpreting the result.

A fair comparison begins by deciding what “stronger” means. The heaviest weight lifted, the largest total, the best lift relative to bodyweight, and the highest federation score are all valid measures—but they do not answer the same question.
Use the narrowest comparison that fits your goal, and make the assumptions visible.
Match the performance first
Compare the same exercise and the same kind of result. A squat should be compared with a squat, a powerlifting total with a total, and a one-repetition maximum with another one-repetition maximum. Estimated maximums from rep sets can be useful in training, but they should not be presented as identical to completed singles.
The movement standard matters too. Squat depth, a bench pause, commands, lockout, and allowed technique can differ by organization or platform. When standards differ, label the comparison instead of hiding the difference.
Match equipment and conditions
Equipment can materially change a result. Raw, wraps, single-ply, and multi-ply performances belong in separate comparisons unless a scoring system explicitly accounts for them. Belt use, knee sleeves, straps, specialty bars, and supportive gear should be recorded where relevant.
Gym lifts and judged competition lifts can both be meaningful, but they carry different evidence. A useful public record states which kind of performance it is and shows the proof required by that record's rules.
Choose absolute or relative strength
Absolute strength uses the load or total itself. It answers who moved the most weight under the selected standard. Relative strength adjusts the result for bodyweight, either with a simple lift-to-bodyweight ratio or a coefficient formula.
A ratio is easy to understand but does not scale evenly across all bodyweights. Coefficient systems such as DOTS, Wilks, or IPF GL use formulas designed for a particular comparison context. Never mix scores produced by different formulas in one ranking.

Use the correct category
Sex category, age division, weight class, equipment division, and event type can all be part of an official result. Compare within the same category when the purpose is placing or record eligibility. If the purpose is broader analysis, show the categories and explain the adjustment method.
Age coefficients and bodyweight formulas are not interchangeable. An age division groups athletes; an age coefficient mathematically adjusts a result. Use only the method published by the organization whose results you are reading.
Verify the underlying record
A comparison is only as good as its inputs. Confirm:
- the athlete and performance date;
- the completed load and repetitions;
- bodyweight at the relevant time;
- movement and judging standard;
- equipment category;
- video or meet-result evidence;
- the formula and version used for any calculated score.
Avoid comparing a current verified result with an old, unverified claim unless that limitation is clearly stated.
Example: three different winners
Imagine Athlete A deadlifts 250 kilograms at 100 kilograms bodyweight, while Athlete B deadlifts 235 kilograms at 75 kilograms bodyweight. Athlete A wins the absolute comparison because 250 kilograms is heavier. Athlete B has the larger simple ratio: about 3.13 times bodyweight versus 2.50.
A federation coefficient could produce another ordering depending on its formula and categories. None of those answers is automatically wrong. The mistake is presenting one measure as though it answered every question.
A fair-comparison checklist
Before publishing or acting on a ranking, ask:
- Are these the same lift or event?
- Were the completion standards comparable?
- Are equipment categories matched?
- Are bodyweight and other categories recorded correctly?
- Is the same scoring formula used for every entry?
- Is the evidence strong enough for the claim being made?
If any answer is no, narrow the claim or add context. Fair comparison is less about finding one perfect number and more about making the rules visible.
