Absolute Strength vs. Relative Strength
Understand absolute and relative strength, how bodyweight ratios and coefficient scores differ, and which measure fits each strength comparison.

Absolute strength is the amount of weight moved. Relative strength describes a performance in relation to bodyweight or another normalizing method. The two measures are complementary: one highlights total force production, while the other helps compare athletes of different sizes.
Neither measure is universally better. Choose the one that matches the question.
What absolute strength means
An absolute ranking orders valid performances by load or total. If one athlete squats 220 kilograms and another squats 200 kilograms under the same rules, the 220-kilogram squat is the stronger absolute result.
Absolute strength is the right measure when the question is simply who lifted the most weight. It is also central to weight-class competition because athletes still place according to their successful attempts or total within the class.
What relative strength means
Relative strength adjusts for athlete size. The simplest method divides the lift by bodyweight:
Relative strength ratio = lift weight ÷ bodyweight
An 80-kilogram athlete who squats 160 kilograms has a 2.0-times-bodyweight squat. A 120-kilogram athlete who squats 210 kilograms has a 1.75 ratio. The second athlete is stronger absolutely; the first has the larger simple bodyweight ratio.
Ratios are intuitive, but they can favor lighter athletes because strength does not increase in direct proportion to body mass.
Why coefficient formulas exist
Systems such as Wilks, DOTS, and IPF GL use mathematical curves rather than a straight ratio. They aim to make performances at different bodyweights more comparable within defined categories and events.
Each formula has its own coefficients, bodyweight limits, and intended use. A DOTS score cannot be compared directly with a Wilks score. The formula name and version should always accompany the number.

When to use each measure
Use absolute strength when:
- comparing the heaviest completed lift under one standard;
- placing athletes inside the same weight class;
- tracking whether your actual load or total increased;
- evaluating tasks where total force matters directly.
Use relative strength when:
- comparing athletes across bodyweights;
- assessing how a lift relates to your own body mass;
- creating an overall ranking across weight classes;
- monitoring performance while bodyweight changes.
For a complete athlete profile, show both. “200-kilogram squat at 90 kilograms bodyweight” is more informative than either figure alone.
Bodyweight timing matters
Relative measures require an accurate bodyweight connected to the performance. Competition bodyweight is normally taken at the official weigh-in. A gym lift may use a same-day measurement, but the method should be stated.
Using an old or unusually low bodyweight can inflate a ratio or coefficient score. Keep the bodyweight date and conditions with the record so another reader can understand the calculation.
Strength is more than either number
Absolute and relative scores do not describe technique quality beyond the judging standard, training age, injury history, work capacity, or consistency. They also do not make unlike lifts equivalent. A coefficient cannot repair a comparison between different equipment divisions or incomplete movement standards.
Use the score as one lens on a verified performance. Keep the original lift, bodyweight, category, and evidence visible.
A practical way to report a lift
A clear record might read:
- Squat: 200 kilograms
- Bodyweight: 90 kilograms
- Simple ratio: 2.22 times bodyweight
- Equipment: raw with sleeves
- Evidence: approved video
- Scoring method: named only if a coefficient score is shown
That format lets readers understand both absolute and relative strength without pretending either tells the whole story.
