DOTS Score Explained
Learn how DOTS converts a powerlifting total and bodyweight into comparable points, with the formula, a worked example, and key limitations.

DOTS—Dynamic Objective Team Scoring—is a bodyweight-adjusted powerlifting formula. It converts a total and bodyweight into points so athletes of different sizes can be compared under one scoring system. Higher DOTS points indicate a stronger adjusted performance.
DOTS is not the same as a lift-to-bodyweight ratio, Wilks, or IPF GL. Scores should only be compared when the same formula and compatible rules were used.
Inputs used by DOTS
A standard DOTS calculation requires:
- bodyweight in kilograms;
- a powerlifting total in kilograms;
- the applicable male or female coefficient set.
The total is normally the sum of the best successful squat, bench press, and deadlift. Some calculators also display DOTS for single lifts, but the event type should be clearly labeled.
The DOTS formula
DOTS first calculates a bodyweight coefficient:
Coefficient = 500 ÷ (a·x⁴ + b·x³ + c·x² + d·x + e)
In that expression, x is bodyweight in kilograms and a through e are the published coefficients for the applicable sex category. The points calculation is:
DOTS points = total in kilograms × coefficient
The polynomial curve is designed to provide a more useful cross-bodyweight comparison than simple division.
Worked example
Using the men's DOTS coefficients, a 100-kilogram athlete with a 600-kilogram total receives a coefficient of approximately 0.61552.
600 × 0.61552 = 369.31 DOTS points
An athlete with 380 DOTS has the higher adjusted result if both scores use the same event, formula, and compatible performance rules.
Defined bodyweight bounds
Implementations apply the published formula within defined bodyweight ranges. OpenPowerlifting's implementation clamps men's bodyweight between 40 and 210 kilograms and women's bodyweight between 40 and 150 kilograms for the coefficient calculation.
That means an out-of-range bodyweight uses the nearest boundary in that implementation. A ranking should document its calculator behavior, especially for youth or very heavy athletes.
DOTS versus a bodyweight ratio
A simple ratio divides total by bodyweight. It is transparent, but it tends to reward lighter lifters because strength does not scale linearly with body mass. DOTS uses a fitted curve to reduce that distortion.
The formula still reflects modeling choices and the data used to create it. It should be treated as one standardized comparison—not a perfect measure of athletic ability.
DOTS versus Wilks and IPF GL
Wilks and DOTS both use bodyweight polynomials, but their coefficients and curves differ. IPF GL uses a different equation and parameters tied to sex category, equipment, and event. The International Powerlifting Federation publishes IPF GL for its sanctioned events.
Never place a 400 DOTS result beside a 400 Wilks result and call them equal. Keep each leaderboard internally consistent.
Common mistakes
- Entering pounds instead of kilograms.
- Using a bodyweight unrelated to the performance date.
- Combining raw and equipped totals without separate categories.
- Comparing a full-power total with a single-lift result.
- Mixing DOTS with another formula.
- Treating a calculated score as proof that the lifts met the required standard.
The score is only as reliable as the total, bodyweight, categories, and evidence behind it.
